This Black Handmade Tibetan Singing Bowl is a traditionally hand-forged bell bronze bowl finished with a deep black surface. It is made for people who want a modern, minimal aesthetic while still working with a fully functional, traditionally made singing bowl.

Unlike natural bronze bowls, the black finish creates a stronger visual contrast that feels contemporary and understated. It does not change the way the bowl is made or tested, only how it appears in space.

Each bowl is made by hand in Nepal using traditional hammer forging methods that have been passed through generations of Himalayan artisans.

Choose this bowl if you want:

  • a bold, modern black aesthetic
  • a minimalist alternative to bronze bowls
  • a handmade bowl with a contemporary visual style
  • a non-traditional look for meditation or decor spaces

Not ideal if you want:

  • a warm traditional bronze finish (choose polished)
  • a soft, low-sheen look (choose matte / dim)
  • an aged or weathered appearance (choose antique)

What the black finish actually is

The black finish is the final surface layer applied after the bowl has already been fully formed, refined and sound tested.

It is not paint in the decorative sense, but a finishing treatment that darkens the surface of the bell bronze while keeping the underlying structure intact.

The bowl itself is already complete before this stage. The finish only changes the visual appearance, not the acoustic structure.

How it is made

Each bowl begins as bell bronze made from approximately 78 per cent copper and 22 per cent tin. The metal is melted and cast into a raw form before shaping begins.

In the workshop, the bowl is gradually formed through repeated cycles of heating and hammering. It is stretched, refined and reshaped through traditional forging stages until the correct form is achieved.

These stages follow a structured process of transformation, where the metal moves from a raw disc into a fully formed bowl through skilled manual work.

Different artisans contribute to different stages of production. One may shape the form, another refines the surface, and another tests the sound. The bowl is only considered complete once its tone is balanced and its resonance holds clearly when struck.

After this process, the black finish is applied as the final visual layer.

Sound and character

Each bowl has its own tone, shaped by:

  • diameter
  • wall thickness
  • hammering pattern
  • bronze composition
  • structural refinement during forging

The black finish does not meaningfully affect the sound. It is a visual treatment only.

Smaller bowls tend to produce brighter, higher tones. Larger bowls create deeper resonance with longer sustain.

When tested, each bowl is struck and played for sustain and clarity. The longer the resonance holds, the more refined the bowl is considered within the workshop grading process.

Who this bowl is for

This bowl is made for:

  • modern meditation spaces with minimal design
  • customers who prefer dark or monochrome aesthetics
  • yoga and breathwork practitioners wanting a simple visual style
  • interior styling where traditional bronze feels too warm or decorative
  • gifting where a distinctive, contemporary look is preferred

Choosing your size

  • Smaller bowls: lighter, brighter tone, easier to handle
  • Medium bowls: balanced tone and versatility
  • Larger bowls: deeper vibration and longer sustain

If you are unsure, listening to sound samples is the best way to choose.

What is the black finish?

It is a surface treatment applied after the bowl has been fully formed and sound tested. It changes the appearance, not the structure or sound.

Does the black finish change the sound?

No. The sound is primarily determined by size, thickness and forging quality, not surface finish.

Is this bowl handmade?

Yes. Each bowl is individually hand forged in Nepal using traditional bell bronze techniques.

How is this different from a polished singing bowl?

A polished bowl has a bright reflective surface, while a matte bowl has a soft non-reflective finish.

How is this different from an antique singing bowl?

Antique bowls are darkened to create an aged patina look. Matte bowls are clean, modern and understated rather than aged.

Does it come with accessories?

Yes. Each bowl includes a wooden striker (mallet). Cushions are sold separately
